F. Martin Tieber is a highly experienced criminal defense attorney who specializes in criminal appeals, postconviction proceedings including MCR 6.500 motions, and federal habeas litigation. He has recently been described by the Detroit Free Press and Michigan Lawyers Weekly as “one of the nation’s top criminal appellate experts.” For a quarter century he directed the Lansing office of the State Appellate Defender, a nationally acclaimed agency. Mr.Tieber’s appellate experience consists of hundreds of cases, and, since 1973, he has practiced in nearly all of Michigan’s trial courts, the Michigan Court of Appeals, the Michigan Supreme Court, the federal district courts for the Eastern and Western Districts in Michigan, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, and the United States Supreme Court. He is admitted to practice before all of these courts.
Mr. Tieber received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1972 and his law degree from Wayne State University Law School in 1975. He has served as President of the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan and is a Life Member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys.
In 2002, Mr. Tieber was recognized by Michigan Lawyers Weekly as a Lawyer of the Year. He was instrumental in establishing Michigan’s Innocence Project in 2002 and was elected the first chair of the Innocence Project Commission. Mr. Tieber served for decades as an adjunct professor at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan, and lectures extensively on many criminal law issues – including Michigan postconviction practice and federal habeas litigation.

Kristoffer W. Samantha H. Tieber, was admitted to the Illinois bar in November of 2009 after graduating in the top third of her class at Wayne State University Law School. While maintaining her competitive grade point average, she served as a representative of the Woman's Law Caucus and as a member of the Women's Lawyer Association of Michigan. Samantha competed on the law school's mock trial team, and also coached a local Detroit high school's team. Samantha has a Bachelor's degree in English Literature from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

In law school,Samantha earned a sought-after internship at the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office in the Child Abuse Unit of the Trial Division. Samantha dove in and took on a great deal of responsibility: drafting legal documents; co-chairing jury trials; going on the record for direct examinations; going on the record for various motions and preliminary exams; interviewing complainants and key witnesses; doing extensive research. Samantha also served as an intern for the Honorable Judge Helene White, who now sits on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati. Samantha drafted in-depth, highly researched opinions and bench memos, advising the judge on rulings. Interning for Judge White served as an excellent way for Samantha to learn the ins and outs of the appellate system. Samantha is a member of both the Illinois and Michigan Bars.
